Cultural Corner Community Mosaic

Cultural Corner Community Mosaic

1 x £1000 commission plus materials

Fegg Hayes Futures and B arts want to commission an artist to work with community members in Fegg Hayes in Stoke-On-Trent to create a mosaic artwork celebrating the culture and community of the neighbourhood. The mosaic will be installed as a back board for a community planter which will be positioned outside our centre (The Hub@ST6, Stoke-On-Trent, ST6 6QR).  The mosaic will be part of a wider art trail currently being designed around this ‘corner’ of the neighbourhood, featuring decorative planters and street art.

£1000 fee plus materials

Theme

The art trail aims to celebrate the neighbourhood, including its heritage, its wildlife, and creative and community activity.  Lots of cultural and community work happens in the area, but this is not always visible.  The art trail will help make the outside parts of our neighbourhood match the vibrant creative and community activity that takes place.

We are open for the artist to work with communities to approach this in any way that resonates with them and to create an artwork that is in one piece or multiple smaller pieces.

Commission

We are asking for the artist to:

·      Design and deliver an accessible workshop suitable for adults and family groups that enables them to contribute ideas to the design of the mosaic.

·      Design and deliver an accessible workshop suitable for adults and family groups that enables contribution to the creation of the final piece (either through making component parts or by directly working on the mosaic creation)

·      Design and oversee the execution of a mosaic artwork, that is suitable for external installation forming a back display for a planter positioned next to a wall (pictured below).

The artists will be supported by a curator/producer from B arts and the community development worker at Fegg Hayes Hub, alongside community volunteers and co-creators

Budget

£1000 per artist to cover fees (inclusive of VAT if applicable).

We have separate budget to cover materials. Where appropriate we would be keen to explore environmentally sustainable approaches to how the artworks are made with the commissioned artists (ie using recycled materials/ second hand pottery etc) and we would support sourcing materials if this approach is taken.
